<h3>Applications Being Accepted for 2013 SAME Construction Camps</h3>
<p>SAME offers a very unique series of engineering camps designed for High School students who excel in math, science and technical courses and are interested in pursuing engineering in college. <span id="more-1703"></span>These one–week camps are high energy, hands–on events for students from across the country and around the world.</p>
<p>The camps are led by a professional staff of engineers from both private industry and the military services.</p>
<p>SAME Honolulu Post is currently accepting applications for the 2013 SAME Construction Camps. The Post will sponsor four local students, one for each of the four military service&#8217;s construction camps. The total registration fee for a camp is $550, and SAME will pay for half of this fee ($275), along with transportation costs.</p>

<p>On behalf of the Hawaii Council of Engineering Societies (HCES), SAME Honolulu respectfully asks for the assistance of our members to help support Engineers Week 2013 and the opportunity to support the week long activities through various sponsorship levels.<span id="more-1670"></span></p>
<p>HCES will once again be organizing events during the 2013 Engineers Week that includes a luncheon, a public exhibit, and a banquet. This coming year, the Engineers Week Exhibits will be held at Pearlridge Shopping Center from February 16-18, 2013. At the closure of Engineer’s Week, February 23, the awards banquet will be held at the Ko’olau Ballroms and Conference Center in Kaneohe. Static displays created by local companies or organizations will be on display at the mall.</p>

All Islands, November 13 &#8211; 20, 2012</h3>
<p>The State Building Code Council has approved a new energy code and adoption is underway in Honolulu, Kauai, Hawaii, and Maui. Learn about the new requirements in a one-day technical seminar co-sponsored by the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism and Hawaii Energy held statewide for private sector professionals, building professionals, architects, engineers and contractors, as well as local code and building officials. The training will provide a review of IECC 2009 and Hawaii amendments, as well as information on Design Strategies for Code Compliance for air-conditioned residences and small commercial buildings.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1566" title="Annie Lovell" src="http://www.samehonolulu.org/wp-content/uploads/annie_lovell-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="75" height="75" />The SAME Honolulu Post is pleased to announce that Annie Lovell, an environmental scientist at EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., has been nominated by the Honolulu Post to attend SAME’s 2012 Summer Post Leaders Workshop. The purpose of the workshop, which will be held this August in Alexandria, Virginia, is to provide emerging leaders with information about SAME and proven best practices associated with Post operations.<span id="more-1565"></span></p>
<p>As a young member, Ms. Lovell has been actively involved in the SAME Honolulu Post for several years. She has been providing assistance to the Professional Development Chair to provide professional development certificates to SAME members who attend monthly meetings and other events. Mr. Lovell attended the 2011 Pacific Industry Forum and represented EA in the associated scholarship golf tournament. Additionally, she assisted with planning the 2012 Pacific Industry Forum. Ms. Lovell has also volunteered at SAME sponsored events, including judging at the Hawaii State Science Fair and the VEX Robotics High School Championships.</p>

<h3>2011 SAME Honolulu Scholarship Winners</h3>
<p>Each year, SAME Honolulu offers several $2,500 scholarships to deserving high school seniors and college students who will be or are currently enrolled at a university with an accredited engineering or architecture program. <span id="more-625"></span>This year, thanks to the generous donations of the Honolulu Post’s sustaining and general members, SAME Honolulu was able to award six $2,500 scholarships to the following individuals:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>James Joly</strong> of Mid-Pacific Institute who will attend the University of Southern California majoring in Aerospace/Astronautical Engineering.</li>
<li><strong>Brandon Arakawa </strong>of Hawaii Baptist Academy who will attend the University of Idaho majoring in Civil Engineering.</li>
<li><strong>Austin Barnes</strong> of the University of Hawaii at Manoa who is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Ocean and Resources Engineering.</li>
<li><strong>William Tadekawa</strong> of Kaiser High School who will attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign majoring in Electrical Engineering.</li>
<li><strong>Catherine Kim</strong> of Kalani High School who will attend Stevens Institute of Technology majoring in Computer Science and Information Technology.</li>
<li><strong>Jewel Montgomery</strong> of Radford High School who will attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa majoring in Civil Engineering.</li>
</ol>
<p>The scholarship committee members consisted of <strong>Julie Chen</strong>, <strong>Paul Luersen</strong>, <strong>LCDR Andrew Wright</strong>, and <strong>Jeff Clark</strong>. A total of 29 applications were received with 3 applications disqualified after the initial screening. The committee evaluated a total of 26 very qualified applications.</p>
<p>Congratulations to all six scholarship winners for their achievements!</p>
